Hotel Villa Pinares de Mayarí, more than 700 meters above sea level in the National Park La Mensura , is one of Cuba’s original eco-tourist installations. Built in 1967, the rustic cottages and log cabins give a nod to Swiss styles and blend beautifully into the natural environment.
This is one of the most biodiverse areas in Cuba, with more than 445 species of plants and 90 types of birds. The area’s natural splendor includes pine forests, ferns, creeks, waterfalls and fresh water ponds – perfect terrain for climbing, hiking, bird watching and horseback riding.
The Villa Pinares de Mayarí has a restaurant-bar-cafeteria and a small, cute swimming pool, plus a gym. Additionally, hotel staff have created a botanical garden (Cuba Travel Network made an eco-friendly contribution by planting a mahogany tree).
This basic, but comfortable 2-star property offers a stunning natural setting with a wide range of outdoor activities.
Affordable outings organized by the hotel include walking tours, horseback riding and truck safaris. Wildlife watching at the hacienda La Mensura , about 8 km away is another option; fallow-deer, wapiti and black antelopes can be seen on this excursion.
A popular hike takes you to the Salto del Guayabo along a 1200m trail; here you can take a rejuvenating swim. Another trail, La Sabina , is just 1 km from the villa. La Plancha , in a refreshing mountain microclimate, has coffee plantations and a variety of plants such as cocoa, citrus, pineapple, sugar cane and coconut.
GETTING THERE
