The 50’s are back!!! But did the aura actually ever leave Havana?
The end of the 1950’s brought closure to the gangster and mafia life in Cuba. As the mafia bosses scrambled to leave Cuba, their casinos closed. However, it is undeniably true that the allure of the 50’s still remains throughout Havana.
American tourism to Cuba was launched in 1952, and the demand for tourist facilities steadily increased throughout this time. Officially opened in 1957, Hotel Capri supplied many rooms for the large tourist community, although the hotel casino was more largely recognized. During this time, the presence of a casino was of great importance, more than the actual hotel itself…after all, the big bucks were earned there!
Over 55 years later, the iconic Hotel Capri was reopened after an extensive renovation, on the eve of 2014. The modernization of the hotel included the replacement of elevators, installation of central air conditioning and Wi-Fi, as well as many other additional upgrades. However, great care has been taken in preserving the original architecture, design, and the feel of the bygone.
Hotel Capri is located in a vibrant neighborhood of Havana where many classic cars from the 1950’s can be seen purring down the streets. Entering the spacious and bright lobby of the Capri, the immediate revival of the 1950’s is carried from the street, from the original art-deco granite floors and the restored lobby chandeliers. Carefully designed furniture also gives a nod back to this important era in Cuban history. Guestrooms also remain loyal to the roots and flare of the hotel’s history with 1950’s inspired décor of solid furniture and nice fabrics throughout.
The iconic rooftop swimming pool provides endless and breathtaking views of Havana, both ocean and city. Here, one can leisurely lounge pool side while sipping a cocktail of your choice.
Hotel Capri offers several restaurants, both a la carte and buffet, as well as a snack bar. A bar can also be found in the lobby and alongside the pool. In addition, there is an Executive Floor with gym and sauna facilities (operational mid-2014).
