The island’s second-largest city, Santiago de Cuba, is rhythmic, buoyant and hot. When you’re ready to escape the heat and slow down a step, head to the Gran Piedra (the Big Rock), located in a microclimate 1200 meters above sea level, but only 20 kilometers from Santiago de Cuba.
The temperature drops noticeably as you drive the 12 kilometers along a switchback road to the top of the rock. If you’re coming from Santiago’s tropical torpor, it will be a welcome change! This microclimate benefits the lush and varied flora that characterizes this area.
The Gran Piedra is precisely that – a massive volcanic rock measuring 51 x 25 x 30mtrs (L x H x W); take the 452 steps to its summit and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful, long vistas over the mountains and down to the coast.
Typically visited on a daytrip, nature lovers and eco tourists will appreciate the peaceful environment provided on an overnight here. Accommodation is in a 2-star hotel, with a corresponding two-star price; the setting however, is sublime. The simple, rustic cabins are brick, with tiled roofs, and extremely spacious – including the balconies with panoramic views, they even feature an open fireplace. The complex boast a restaurant.
The Cafetal La Isabelica, 2 kilometers away, is one of the area’s first coffee plantations, for which it earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The plantation’s colonial mansion is still intact and worth the visit. Guided hikes on 4 different trails are organized by the hotel.
GETTING THERE
• There are regular domestic flights from Havana to Santiago de Cuba. You can reserve transfers (booked with prior reservation) from Santiago de Cuba to the Hotel La Gran Piedra.
• There’s an interesting Jeep Safari (8 hours) to the Gran Piedra and other points of interest in the area. For convenience you could take the safari and then stay afterwards in the hotel. The hotel will take care of your luggage and organize your transfer the next day.
• Hiring a car is an option. Leaving Santiago de Cuba in the direction east towards the Granjita Siboney - Parque Bacanao, turn at the "" Km14, Santiago "" where there is an entrance signed for the Gran Piedra. However, for an easy and comfortable journey we recommend a transfer.
