Baracoa’s bayside location is not only beautiful, it’s strategic, which is why the Spanish built ""El Castillo de Santa Bárbara Ceboruco"" on a rise overlooking the city. Started in 1737 and finished in 1742, the fort was built to protect Baracoa against pirates plaguing the Caribbean back in the day.
In 1977, a hotel was built on the exact place of the earlier fort. The yellow building, with its distinctive architecture, is eye-catching and channels East African, and even Scottish, styles. But with panoramic views over the city, you’ll never doubt that you’re in beautiful Baracoa – Cuba's oldest city, founded five centuries ago.
High on a hill, the stairs to the hotel are steep, but worth the climb for the views from the top. From here you get sweeping vistas of El Yunque (declared a national monument in 1979), a 575-meter mountain just outside Baracoa. It got its name, which means anvil, thanks to its table mountain shape. This is completed by views of the city, the bay and surrounding rural landscape with its many rivers.
El Castillo has a pool with sundeck and snack bar, from where you can also enjoy the priceless views. There’s also a restaurant.
Consider to spend more than one night in this dynamic, authentic Cuban town and the Hotel El Castillo makes the perfect base for your explorations.
