Baracoa was the first settlement founded by the Spanish in Cuba. They knew a good thing when they saw it: this is one of the island’s most idyllic and photogenic settings. The year was 1511.
Centuries later, Ciro Frias street in the colonial center, housed a hotel called Legrá. In 1961, it was renamed the Hotel Liberación. It saw its share of guests until it ceased to be a hotel and was occupied by local families. After a time, the building fell into extreme disrepair.
The residents of Baracoa became concerned about the decline of the landmark building, until one morning a tractor drove up, parked in front and renovation of the hotel began. It was christened Hostal 1511 in honor of the founding of Baracoa and opened on May 1st, 2011 – a present to the citizens to celebrate the 500th anniversary of their city.
Hostal 1511 is a small, elegant hotel fully fitting with Baracoa’s charming profile. Its two floors are painted in a perky blue-white-pink tricolor. There is no restaurant, but the lobby bar and cafeteria serve light snacks and breakfast. You won’t want for places to eat however since it’s in the heart of downtown, a step away from the Plaza Independencia.
Sites worth visiting include the Casa de la Trova or the church Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa with the Cruz de la Parra, a wooden cross brought by Columbus on his first voyage.
Getting there
• Domestic flights are scheduled from Havana to the Baracoa airport. Connecting prearranged (private) transfers can be booked from the airport to Baracoa’s hotels. • Private transfers can also be booked from Santiago City to Baracoa.
• Car rental is an option. Be aware that distances from Holguín and Santiago de Cuba are 255km and 242km respectively, with less than ideal road conditions. Driving times should be planned carefully.
