A huge bay protected by cliffs and ringed with mangrove forests; African wildlife; gorgeous beaches boasting the finest white sand and turquoise waters with mild temperatures – all of this is to be found on remote Cayo Saetía. To fully appreciate this natural splendor, consider an overnight stay of at least one night at Villa Cayo Saetía.
This hotel complex was constructed in 1990, with concrete buildings later complemented by wooden cabins which melded more harmoniously with the natural environment. There is also a charming, rustic restaurant/bar at the entrance to the island, overlooking the beaches and bay. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted by colorful, talkative parrots upon arrival.
Cayo Saetía is unique in Cuba for its free-range exotic animal farm featuring antelopes, zebras and water buffaloes. You can see these and other exotic animals on one of the excursions organized by the hotel – including a one-hour Jeep safari across the cay. More active travelers might consider taking a guided safari on horseback. Bay boat cruises and catamaran sails are also on offer – perfect for exploring the underwater flora and fauna endemic to the nearby barrier reef. Fishing trips and sunset sails are other possibilities.
• There are regular domestic flights from Havana to Holguín, and private transfers can be arranged from the airport at Holguín to Cayo Saetía.
• Car hire is another option. Coming from Holguín, drive towards Mayarí (approximately 87 kilometers), and later on to Cajimaya, another 8 kilometers, before taking a left towards the control point and entrance to Cayo Saetía.
